Christmas Tree

One of the trees that decorated our sanctuary at Christmas 1979.

The Christmas tree is an evergreen, symbol of the everlasting life with God we are given.

Legend tells of a cold December night when Martin Luther was returning home and witnessed the beauty of starlight shining on the snow-covered branches of the fir trees in the forest. Wanting to share the wonder of this beautiful sight with his family, he brought home a small evergreen tree and tied small white candles on its branches.

Martin Luther shared his view of the gift of God's Son and the light He brought into the world with the symbol of the evergreen tree that we still use today.

“The days are coming,” declares the LORD,
“when I will raise up to David a righteous Branch,
a King who will reign wisely
and do what is just and right in the land.”

Jeremiah 23:5 NIV
